Pearl: A Quiet Kind of Shine

Pearl: A Quiet Kind of Shine

June’s birthstone is the pearl,  and it feels like the right time to share a closer look at one of my favourite materials to work with. Pearls have a way of adding a quiet kind of shine- it doesn’t sparkle for your attention, but it’s definitely noticeable.

Why June Belongs to Pearls

Pearl is the traditional birthstone for June, a connection that goes back many centuries. In ancient Rome, pearls were considered a symbol of love and status, and were often reserved for special occasions. In other parts of the world, pearls were believed to offer protection, wisdom, and good fortune. Over time, pearls came to be associated with beginnings, softness, and a gentle kind of strength — all things that feel very fitting for early summer. You can learn more about the pearl’s meaning and history here.

How I Choose and Work With Pearls

In my Pearl collection, every piece that I design and make, I’m thinking about how it will be worn. Pearls can have a reputation of looking stuffy and old-fashioned so I like to use pearls as a design accent. The smooth shape and colour of the pearl is highlighted when paired with silver patterns and textures.  I also have been using various colours of silk to knot my pearl strands. This is a modern and fun twist that really brings a strand of pearls to life.

Inside the Pearl Collection

If you browse the Pearl collection, you’ll notice a mix of styles and materials. Some pieces are simple and understated, designed to be worn daily. Others are more sculptural or layered, created for moments when you want your jewellery to make more of a statement. This variety reflects the way the collection has grown over time. Pieces are added as new ideas emerge and as I find pearls that inspire a specific shape or setting. If you’re not sure where to start, think about:

  • Everyday ease: Look for smaller, lighter pieces you can wear all day without thinking about them. Product Recommendation: Modern Pearl Necklace

  • Special moments: Choose something with a bit more presence for weddings, celebrations, or milestones. Product Recommendation: Lucious Oval Pearl Drops

Caring for Your Pearl Jewellery

Pearls will last for many years with a little bit of care. Here are a few simple tips I recommend:

  • Avoid using perfume or any scented body lotion when wearing pearls.

  • Wipe them gently with a soft cloth after wearing.

  • Store them separately from sharp or rough jewellery that could scratch them.

These small habits help your pearls keep their natural lustre so you can enjoy them for a long time.

A Piece That Feels Like You

Whether you have a June birthday or simply love the look and feel of pearls, I hope this collection gives you options that feel like an easy “yes” when you put them on. My goal is always to create jewellery that fits into your life, feels good on your body, and quietly tells a story every time you wear it.

If you’d like to see the Pearl collection in person, I’ll be at Art in the Park in Ottawa on June 13–14 with a selection of pearl pieces (and more). I’d love for you to stop by, say hello, and try a few favourites on.
